We had a great school year and are now busy preparing for our new session in June. Before we closed for the summer, we did the fun and very important concept of ‘Community Helpers’.
Given that the topic is an extremely wide one, we gave it great thought and decided to focus primarily on those people who the children meet as part of their daily lives, such as, doctors, teachers, domestic helpers at home, policemen, chefs, etc.

We also introduced a few people like the mason whom they don’t see but should know of, as such people contribute towards making their lives comfortable.

We went about the whole concept by first talking to them about each helper individually. We then introduced each role to the children in the form of dolls. Next, we had pretend play doing all the activities that each helper would do as part of their regular jobs.

We even had a dress-up role play session, where our little toddlers delighted in trying on various costumes.

We strengthened the concepts of different community helpers through a few art activities, some fun sing-along songs and stories. All these activities emphasised the importance and roles of community helpers in the eyes and minds of our young preschoolers.

Finally we welcomed a few of the community helpers to our school to give our toddlers a chance to interact with them and thereby understand them better.

We completed the concept with a show and tell session where our preschoolers came dressed in various costumes and spoke a few words on their chosen community helper.
